United Nations agrees to establish Asteroid Warning Group to defend Earth against impacts

The passing of 2013 TV135 acted as an exclamation mark to his plea.

Now, the United Nations General Assembly has voted to establish an asteroid defence plan.

It will create an International Asteroid Warning Group to allow member nations to share information and coordinate surveillance efforts in an effort to locate dangerous space objects

But will it be enough?

The astronaut pointed out that most in the space sciences only found out about the Chelyabinsk meteor which detonated with the force of 440 kilotons of explosive over Russia and injured more than 1000 earlier this year after reading about it on Twitter and Facebook.

“Chelyabinsk was bad luck,” he said. “If we get hit again 20 years from now, that is not bad luck that’s stupidity.”
