Garrett is founder of Ask.com and a co-founder of Alta Partners, a venture capital firm. He has been working for more than two decades in the fields of software development, systems engineering and corporate development. In 1982, he founded Virtual Microsystems, a communications software company. Garrett currently serves as acting CEO for Nanomix located in Emeryville, CA. Gruener is an accomplished pilot.

Amy Slater is an attorney and lecturer on the subject of negotiations and conflict resolution at the Goldman School of Public Policy and at University of California Hastings School of Law. Garrett and Amy reside in the Bay Area.
