Piet is a professor of astrophysics at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton University, where he is also the head of the Program for Interdisciplinary Studies. He specializes in stellar and planetary dynamics, and has published over two hundred articles in collaboration with colleagues in particle physics, geophysics, paleontology, computer science, cognitive psychology, and philosophy.

Piet served as a founding member of B612 Foundation Board of Directors.
