When B612 cofounded Asteroid Day twelve years ago, we believed the world needed a dedicated moment to talk about asteroids, not just as fascinating remnants of our solar system, but as objects that hold profound importance for humanity’s enduring future. We wanted to inspire greater investment in asteroid discovery, scientific research, planetary defense, and public education.

This week, that vision reached an important milestone.

The United States Senate has unanimously passed its first-ever resolution recognizing June 30 as Asteroid Day. Introduced by Senators Mark Kelly (D-AZ), Jerry Moran (R-KS), and John Cornyn (R-TX), the bipartisan resolution affirms the importance of planetary defense, scientific innovation, public engagement, and international collaboration in addressing near-Earth object threats.

As the lead founding sponsor of Asteroid Day, B612 has spent more than two decades working to build the scientific tools that help us discover, track, and better understand asteroids. But technology alone isn’t enough. Protecting Earth also requires an informed public, sustained investment in science, and a new generation of researchers, engineers, and explorers inspired to tackle these challenges.

That has always been the purpose of Asteroid Day.

This Senate resolution is more than a symbolic recognition. It is an affirmation that asteroid science matters, that planetary defense is a shared global responsibility, and that education remains one of the most powerful tools we have to prepare for the future.
